If each player disciplines themselves, less time has to be spent by coaches punishing them. Which allows more time for basketball.
If a player is late, and coach makes the entire team run, that time is being taken from a productive practice plan. This is a lot more costly in games. Failing to discipline yourself is selfish. If one player fails to box out, the other team could get a put-back that costs you the entire game.
A disciplined team is an unselfish, productive, focused, and winning team.
So how can we become more disciplined and strengthen our willpower?
Discipline is a choice. It doesn’t matter how lazy you think you are or how much talent you do or do not have, anyone can choose to be disciplined.
There will be times when you don’t want to workout and it would be much easier to go back to sleep; that’s the perfect opportunity to strengthen your willpower. Discipline gets you through those days. The more you practice this, the more disciplined you will become.
Everyone wants to be known as a disciplined person. If we don’t choose discipline, we’ll finish our seasons and eventually our careers with a lot of regret, knowing we didn’t reach our full potential.
Disciplined players stay in great shape, eat healthy, take good care of their bodies, go hard in practice, and put in extra work-- even when they don’t feel like doing it.
Every day you are faced with a series of choices: you can either choose to be disciplined or choose the easy way. If you want to win, discipline is always the right answer.
Disciplined teams have no tolerance for anything that gets in the way of winning. If someone isn’t living up to team standards, they get held accountable. When you hold someone accountable, it means you care enough about them to not let them settle for mediocrity.
Great teams are disciplined in every way. They’re disciplined in the way they carry themselves, dress, run their offense, play defense, and in the way they communicate. A disciplined team, is a caring team with high standards.
Self discipline is what separates the good players from great players.
Discipline is what separates the good teams from the great teams. Discipline is essential to success.
In basketball, when most kids think of a winner, they probably think of someone who scores a ton of points, but that’s not true. There are some players who have average 30 plus points a game and never won. Being a winner is not just about scoring. It's more about being willing to do the things that doesn't show up on the stat sheet. Doing the work that most people overlook, like all the unseen work. Majority of the things that winning requires won’t show up on the stat sheet. Being a winner won’t always equal an award, and you may not go viral. If you want to win, you have to be willing sacrifice and put in the hard work it takes to win.
"The vision of a champion is someone who is bent over, drenched in sweat, at the point of exhaustion when nobody else is watching.” -Anson Dorrance
It’s rare for a player to do all of these things. Most players just want to score a lot of points. You won’t go viral for these things, but you’ll win. BE RARE. Commit yourself and become a winner.
